Can We Get Married Online?

Many adults can use a Utah County marriage license for a live online ceremony, even when participants join from different locations. Both partners must meet current licensing and ceremony requirements. This questionnaire identifies common issues to verify; it does not determine legal eligibility or guarantee recognition by another authority.

Both partners must be 18 or older to use Simply Married Online. If either partner is under 18, contact Utah County directly about eligibility and additional requirements before applying. We do not provide ceremonies for minors.

Neither partner may still be legally married to someone else. Separation or filing for divorce is not enough. A divorce must be final before marrying again.

Could an online ceremony work for us?

1Are both of you at least 18 years old?

Both partners must be 18 or older to use Simply Married Online. We do not provide ceremonies for minors. If either partner is under 18, contact Utah County directly about eligibility and additional requirements before applying.

2Is either person still married to someone else, or waiting for a divorce to become final?

A divorce must be final before that person can marry again.

3Are you close relatives, or are you unsure whether Utah allows your relationship?

Utah does not allow marriage between certain close relatives. Choose Not sure if you need to check.

4Can both of you apply for a Utah County marriage license and complete its identity check?

Utah County reviews your application and identification and decides whether to issue the license.

5Can both of you join a live video call, see and hear everyone, and personally say that you want to marry?

Each person must join for themselves. Another person cannot participate in their place.

6Will two people age 18 or older join the ceremony as witnesses?

Choose Yes if you will bring two witnesses or select our $199 package, which includes them.

7Will you use this marriage for immigration, in another country, or with an organization that has its own acceptance rules?

The organization or country may have additional rules for accepting an online marriage.

Who handles the license and who performs the ceremony?

Utah County accepts the application, verifies applicants, issues the marriage license, maintains the marriage record, and issues certificates. Simply Married Online is a separate ceremony provider that supplies an authorized Utah-based officiant, conducts the live online ceremony, and submits the completed ceremony information to Utah County.

What should couples verify before an online marriage?

Couples should confirm Utah County’s current license requirements and the acceptance rules of every authority that will receive the marriage record. Utah County or a qualified lawyer should address circumstances involving legal capacity, prohibited relationships, divorce status, immigration, or foreign recognition.

Can we get married online if we live in different places?+

Partners may join from different locations when the Utah-based officiant, both partners, and both adult witnesses can see and hear one another live and all current Utah County requirements are met.

Do both partners have to be physically present in Utah?+

Utah County permits remote appearance. The authorized officiant must be physically present in Utah, and applicants outside Utah must complete the additional affidavits required in the county's digital license process.

Do we need witnesses for an online Utah ceremony?+

Yes. Two witnesses age 18 or older must observe the partners' declarations and the officiant's pronouncement. Couples may provide both witnesses or choose Simply Married Online's witness-included service.

Will an online Utah marriage be accepted everywhere?+

No universal acceptance should be assumed. Countries, immigration authorities, courts, agencies, employers, and benefits programs may apply their own rules. Confirm requirements with the specific authority before booking.

The screening questions use current Utah County marriage-license and officiant guidance covering age, witnesses, remote participation, affidavits, license expiration, and recognition warnings. Official requirements can change, so couples should review the county’s current instructions before applying or booking and seek qualified legal advice for individual circumstances.
