How many witnesses are required for a Utah online marriage ceremony?

A Utah online marriage ceremony requires two witnesses who are each at least 18 years old. They must observe the couple's declarations and the officiant's pronouncement while everyone can see and hear one another in real time.

Who can be an online marriage witness?

A friend, relative, coworker, or another willing adult may generally serve as a witness if the person is at least 18 and can participate live. Choose dependable people who understand the appointment time and can remain present for the ceremony.

Witnesses are there to observe the required declarations and pronouncement. Their names are entered in the officiant's electronic submission, but Utah County states that they are not required to sign the certificate.

Where can the witnesses join from?

Witnesses may join remotely and do not need to be in the same room, city, state, or country as the couple. The important requirement is a live connection where the officiant, both partners, and both witnesses can see and hear one another.

Each witness should use a quiet location, keep the camera on, and avoid joining while driving or somewhere the connection may drop.

Do witnesses need passports or other ID?

Simply Married Online accepts a driver's license or passport for witness identification. A passport is not required if the witness has a driver's license. Follow your assigned officiant's private instructions for showing the ID. If a witness has another type of ID or cannot provide one, ask us before the appointment. Utah County's Clerk's Office separately asks witnesses at its own ceremonies to have ID available and lists a driver license or passport as examples; its officiant verifies identities before the ceremony.
